This book is an hilarious description of the task of accounting the content of large archives (in this case the Louvres museum vaults act as launching pad for what becomes an intricate system of levels that gets larger and larger - in a sort of inverse pyramid of basements) - so large that no one ever completes the assignment of navigating the whole and the work is passed from experts from generation to generation. Particularly amusing is the specialized expert on different floors, such as the frames department where some guy likes some frames so much that he frames them...
